Barbara Szweda
Associate Professor of Law

B.A., Lawrence University
J.D., Pepperdine University School of Law

Barbara Szweda joined the LMU-DSOL faculty as an Associate Professor Law. She is a graduate of Lawrence University in Wisconsin and received her law degree from Pepperdine University’s School of Law. For ten years, Professor Szweda was a trial attorney in Los Angeles and Oklahoma. Her practice areas included trial and appellate litigation in state and federal courts with principal practice areas including business litigation, oil and gas, antitrust, copyright infringement, product liability, personal injury and medical and legal malpractice.

From there Professor Szweda accepted a teaching position at the University of Notre Dame’s Law School where she taught Immigration Law, Refugee and Asylum Law, as well as skills courses and Poverty Law courses for seventeen years. Professor Szweda is a firm believer in the importance of experiential learning to round out students’ study of law. This belief comes from directing both the Notre Dame Legal Aid Clinic for twelve years and the Notre Dame Immigration Clinic for sixteen years, as well as supervising students in the areas of family law, public benefits and immigration and asylum law.

Professor Szweda came to us most recently from Utah, where she was the legal director for Utah Health and Human Rights, a center for survivors of torture, war and civil unrest. She was also the policy advisor for the ACLU of Utah and championed the protection of civil rights of all people to the Utah State Legislature. While in Utah, Professor Szweda worked closely with the Immigration Court and the other pro bono initiatives sponsored by the law school and the Bar Association to provide training to attorneys and representation to indigent immigrants. Her love of teaching brought her to LMU where she is teaching in the Lawyering Skills program and the Academic Success Program.
